Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for operations
   • Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
   • Access, interpret and apply documentation required to carry out equipment and basic rig maintenance and confirm work activity is compliant
   • Identify and minimise environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activity
   • Clarify difficulties in carrying out instructions with relevant personnel
   • Communicate with other personnel on site as required and confirm briefings and handover details are communicated and received
   • Confirm availability of necessary auxiliary equipment
2. Prepare and paint metal surface
   • Prepare surface using required equipment
   • Apply rust remover, rust converter and undercoat according to operational requirements and workplace procedures
   • Mix epoxy, paracryl or other paints in required proportions
   • Mask and protect equipment against overspray
   • Apply finishing coat using brush, roller and spray gun
   • Clean equipment according to operational requirements and workplace procedure
3. Assist in maintenance of materials handling equipment
   • Identify faults and potential faults and report immediately
   • Identify, record in writing and report as necessary requirements for repair and maintenance
   • Perform periodical maintenance on chain blocks and come-alongs, confirming equipment is corrosion free, lubricated and operating freely
   • Assist with periodical examination of hooks, shackles, slings and strops for defects, required marking of safe working load and ease of operation according to workplace procedures
   • Maintain equipment according to workplace procedures
4. Clean up work area and equipment
   • Isolate area being washed and provide warning signs to indicate slippery decks as required
   • Prepare and apply solvent solutions and rig wash and confirm work area is maintained for non-slippery conditions
   • Clean equipment using hazardous chemicals where required according to safety requirements and stow on completion
   • Clean, preserve and reassess painting equipment

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

carry out equipment and basic rig maintenance on at least two occasions, including:

performing maintenance on at least three pieces of plant or equipment

checking, identifying and reporting defects on rigging equipment

cleaning and preserving equipment on completing work activities using hazardous chemicals where required

applying numerical skills to calculate measurements, mass, load dimensions and safe working loads.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply documentation required for carrying out equipment and basic rig maintenance

conform to safe working practices and organisational requirements

implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for the completion of carrying out equipment and basic rig maintenance, including:

keeping work area clean

selecting and wearing required protective clothing and equipment

conducting pre-operational checks

conducting periodic maintenance on chain blocks, come-alongs and crane hoists

examining hooks, shackles, slings, straps and baskets

assembling rust scaling equipment

assembling surface preparation equipment

confirming safety pins are in air hose fittings

applying rust treatment undercoat and final coat

reporting immediately any malfunction or equipment failure

work with others to carry out equipment and basic rig maintenance tasks that meet required outcomes, including:

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating with others to receive and clarify work instructions

reporting regularly to and work as directed by the driller or derrickman.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

key policies, procedures and established requirements for carrying out equipment and basic rig maintenance, including those for:

safe operating practices

maintaining equipment including chain blocks, comealongs and crane hoist

identifying and using surface preparation equipment

identifying safety pins and air hose fittings

identifying paint types and applications

using equipment cleaning and preservation techniques

platform cleaning

identifying required rust treatment and applications

work health and safety and individual obligations

communicating with other personnel prior to commencing, during and on completion of work activities

normal drilling operations

non-routine drilling operations

hazards relevant to carrying out equipment and basic rig maintenance procedures

drilling team roles and objectives.
